I am sure that from the point of view of the Jews, and particularly people like the Pharisees, Cornelius's faith in יהוה (YHWH) must have been seen as primitive at best. Cornelius was respected by the Jewish people, but he was not one of them. He did not learn the Torah as a young man nor study under any Rabbi in his youth. He was not part of the Jewish community, but was an outsider. In fact, despite his belief in the Hebrew God, as a Gentile and a Roman he could not even have entered into the inner courts of the Temple.
We may wonder how a man who had every reason to put his faith in the pagan gods of Rome would turn away from them and instead put his faith the one true God. How could the gods of the greatest empire on earth be replaced by the God of a people of no particular distinction or worldly accomplishment? A people who would not even accept Cornelius, a Roman Centurion, as an equal?
I think part of the answer, at least, can be found in Paul's letter to the church in Rome (coincidentally). "The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse." Romans 1:18-20.
I cannot fully explain it, but I am convinced that if we seek after God, the one true God will find us. Indeed, it is His joy to find us. God desires nothing more than to be reconciled with all men and women.
Nevertheless, Cornelius was an outsider. Despite his faith in YHWH he was seen as second class -- not worthy to enter into the inner courts of the Temple. And, no doubt his understanding of God was viewed as primitive.
But sometimes there is a benefit to a primitive theology -- which is a purity of faith. It is funny that we are supposed to approach Jesus with the faith of children, but far too often we complicate him so much with human theology and philosophy that the real Jesus becomes no longer recognizable to us. Indeed, part of the reason for our current journey is to trim those things away and rediscover Jesus for ourselves.
What we do know about Cornelius is that "[h]e and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly." He didn't know Jesus, and certainly didn't know what Jesus had said about the greatest commandments. But isn't it interesting that although Cornelius did not know the two greatest commandments, he was nevertheless living them out.
Cornelius was "devout" -- meaning that he had a deep religious feeling toward and total commitment to God. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 'Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law? Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.
Cornelius also "gave generously to those in need." In the Greek this would read "poieō eleēmosynē polys ho laos," which I mention because I think a couple of these Greek words warrant greater attention. The first is "eleēmosynē" -- which means a compassionateness. In other words, Cornelius gave from the heart -- out of compassion -- and not out of some perceived duty. And the second word to think about is "laos" -- which speaks of the multitude. This suggests that Cornelius gave generously and indiscriminately. Jesus said, And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
It is incredibly interesting to me that in John 14 (quoted above) Jesus says essentially that if you obey my commands I will send you the Holy Spirit. In fact, at John 14:23 and 24 Jesus says basically the same thing again: “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me."
In other words, to put it in legal terms, Jesus is making an offer or a promise: if you are obedient you will receive the Holy Spirit -- Jesus will make His home in you! And how amazing is it that we see this very promise being fulfilled in Acts 10 and 11 -- when Cornelius and his household, who have accepted the offer by loving God and loving people, receive the Holy Spirit in the very moment that they hear the Gospel!!
It is no coincidence that receipt of the Holy Spirit comes with an agreement of obedience. Contrary to popular belief in our modern church, the Holy Spirit does not live in us primarily to make our life better or to solve our problems. The Spirit of God cannot be bought with money so that we can impress our friends or advance our kingdoms on earth. See Acts 8:9-25. No, the Holy Spirit comes into our lives to give us the power to advance His kingdom, to conquer sin in our lives, to allow us to focus on Him instead of our circumstances -- to proclaim the glory of God!!
Like most people, there have been times when I have been perplexed by the idea of the burden of following Jesus being "light." Jesus said it plainly enough, but it just hasn't felt that way much of the time.
Like most of us, there have been times when I couldn't see any real transformation in my own life. At other times my faith was shaken when God did not answer my prayers by saving me from my circumstances -- or at least He did not answer the way I expected or hoped. There have been many times when life did not seem consistent with a God who loves me.
But peace is clearly His promise to us: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30. And, if there is one thing I know for certain is that Jesus always keeps his promises. And, more and more I have been able to really embrace this promise.
In a sense, it is a promise that following Jesus is easier than the alternative. (I will leave it to you to check out the greater context of the promise found in Matthew 11:20-27.) But I truly believe it is something much greater than that. I believe it is a promise that if we just stay the course, through the Holy Spirit of God we will come to a place where obedience -- following the commands of Jesus -- becomes our delight and our joy. And actually, when you think about it, shouldn't loving God and loving others be pretty easy? Shouldn't it be a whole lot easier than living a sinful, selfish life?
I also firmly believe that, if we stay the course, while God may not always change our circumstances -- He may not fix our broken relationships, pay our rent, save our jobs or even fix our broken bodies -- He will give us the strength and peace to live in victory despite our circumstances. Through the Spirit of God we are more than conquerors! Through the Spirit we are kingdom builders!!
I also firmly believe that, if we stay the course, while God may not always change our circumstances -- He may not fix our broken relationships, pay our rent, save our jobs or even fix our broken bodies -- He will give us the strength and peace to live in victory despite our circumstances.
